What people need.

Following is the text of the email which Vidhya who is putting the relief material together has received from her niece who lives close to the Tsunami affected areas.

The need is everywhere and even things like cartons today find a use which was never envisaged. People want something to store their belngings now. Safeguard what you have. Let us give them good boxes, cartons. Do not throw away anything, anything at all, it will come in useful to these poor people. Empty bottles, cans, what you would consider as waste and junk finds a new meaning here.

Hi folks,

This is the report i have recieved from my niece in pondy today. Lets
discuss tomorrow at Karthik's Office.

Dear Athai,

RELIEF WORK

Having gone to the Tsunami hit areas in person, I know I am in a
position to give first hand information about the people's requirements
in these various places. I have listed below the names of the places
and the people's needs.

1. Near Marakannam ( on E.C.R 40 Km from Pondy) Three Villages. Requirements: Rice and provisions for 600 families. Since i have been interacting with the people of this village on a daily basis, i have realised that there needs are more towards future forms of livelihood and require long term rehabilitation. Rice is always welcome as even excess does not go waste. There fleet of 24 boats has now been reduced to a mere four extensively damaged boats. Though they have the basic utensils, they dont have any containers to store. There was a scramble for the water
bottles that i had taken. Even the cardboard cartons were attacked as they wanted storage containers.

2. Adjacent to Bhuvanagiri (Near Chidambaram in Cuddalore district) Requirements: Rice, Utensils and provisions for 600 families.

3. Villages near Nagapattinam
Requirements: Rice, Utensils and provisions for 700 families.

With regard to locations 2 and 3, I have deputed people to survey the area and identify the exact villages, their requirements and the exact numbers. If necessary i could have someone accompany all of you to these villages.
