Appeal

Rotary Club of Chennai Kilpauk
Rotary International District 3230
Tamilnadu, India

An Appeal

The Rotary Club of Chennai Kilpauk, (RCCK) through its Charitable Trust, provides relief to the needy in the community and is particularly involved with the physically challenged.

The devastating Tsunami wave which hit many Asian countries including India (Tamilnadu, Andhra and Kerala) has left many thousand dead and caused enormous property damage, as yet un-estimated. It has also displaced many families and rendered many homeless. Governments and the state machinery, though they are doing their best, do not seem to be able to provide co-coordinated relief on such a large scale. Many Non-Government organisations are doing their bit under the circumstances. Emergency aid is flowing in and is likely to be able to bring relief in the immediate future.

RCCK is looking at the post emergency period and would like to be involved in helping those affected by helping them re-start their lives by providing household start up kits consisting of a kerosene stove, a lantern, couple of cooking utensils including plates and tumblers and straw mats. While many would need shelters, RCCK will locate agencies providing such aid and team up with them and help in the re-habilitation process. The immediate plan of action is to assemble about one thousand household kits estimated to cost about Rs. 500,000 and distribute them to the needy in the areas of Nagapattinam and Cuddalore. This could be increased depending on the requirement by assembling further kits. RCCK is also planning to install three water treatment plants of 200 lts./ hour capacity for supplying safe drinking water . These are being sponsored by Pentair Water India Pvt. Ltd. and B.I Marketing and Services Pvt. Ltd. at a cost of Rs. 300,000.

In the second stage, RCCK plans to work with a small community and provide community infrastructure as well as micro loans in order that they may re-establish themselves and join the main stream. Of particular interest will be to help in re-establishing village school infrastructure.

Needless to say that all this will require enormous resources and RCCK appeals to each on e of you to contribute to this cause. RCCK is registered with the Tax authorities and the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act in India and its accounts are subject to audit and annual filing both with the Tax department and the Home ministry.
100% of the funds received are spent on our charitable projects with the members picking up the administrative costs.

Tsunami meeting

We had an emergency meeting yesterday of our Club and laid down plans to provide relief. We will be putting family building kits together immediately. The kit will comprise of a sleeping mat, kerosene stove. Utensils, some provisions this costs about 12 USD a kit, we are looking at about 1000 kits immediately.

The affected now while they have food and clothing are suffering from psychological fears and helplessness. We are trying to reach this kits out to people further away from cities and for whom the relief is not coming in so easily.

People are hovering anxiously in affected areas not knowing what to do next. It is hoped that these kits will be ready in the next efw days and that we will be able to start hading them over to those who have lost their homes with the help of the Government machinery.

Tsunami and what we are doing

The Eastern Coast of India was hit by a Tsunami generated by an Earthquake which took place near Indonesia. However more damage and deaths were caused in the indian Sub continent than closer to the epicenter of the earthquake.

The Killer waves have left many thousands dead and many more homeless. The Rotary Club of Chennai Kilpauk immediately swung into action and has provided whatever relief it can to the needy by way of food, clothing and other materials.

During the Monday meeting the members raised over Rs 35000/- for relief work. Hari Ratan, Mohan Roy and others are doing what they can to raise funds from other Rotary Clubs and friends overseas to help the displaced and the homeless.

The Rotary Club of Chennai Kilpauk is a registered charitable trust with the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Government of India and is therefore authorised to receive donations in foreign exchange. Here are instructions for making contributions.

The Beginning

Rotary Year 1998-99

The inauguration of the Club was in May 1998 and at Radha Park Inn, Chennai. Attended by a large number of District Officials and other Rotarians while DG Krishnan V. Chari was the Chief Guest.. Rtn. Hari Ratan the Charter President of the Club while speaking at the function said that the Club would duing its first year build on its membership, stressing on quality rather than quantity. The 25 would be Charter members were introduced to the gathering. The sponsoring Club, RC of T. Nagar committed itself to the new club.

The Club received its Charter from RI on 17th June 1998. The first Charter Night and the Installation of the Charter President Rtn. Hari Ratan was celebrated at Hotel Breeze at a glittering function on 24th July 1998. With 25 members of which only 2 were Rotarians the Club started with the objective of taking on more members.

During the Charter night Charter President Hari Ratan unvieled the logo of the Club. Departing from the normal practice of choosing a landmark in the locality where the Club exists its members had chosen a smiling face with the words "Happiness all around" as their logo since it represented what they wanted to be and achieve. The logo was designed by Sreevatsa a Charter Member. He was also responsible for designing the masthead for the Club's bulletin "The Chatter".

Wanting to make a difference, be different, think different was upmost on the member's minds. The first year of the Club required a lot of work in terms of membership, administration, planning and of course fellowship. Rtn Hari Ratan during this period was also having to contend with 3 seriously people at home his father, mother and brother. All three of them succumbed to their illness during the year. However, the Charter members stood by him and ensured that all objectives of the club were met during the first year.

The following events took place during the year:
